Uploading Loom videos in Whale

Download a video from Loom and upload it into Whale to generate a step-by-step guide

Already recorded a process in Loom? You can turn it into a Whale guide in two steps. Download the video from Loom, then upload it into Whale. Whale's Video-to-Guide AI analyzes both the audio and the on-screen actions and builds an editable, step-by-step guide, with each step linked to the exact moment it happens in the video.

Prefer to record natively in Whale instead? See How to use our native screen recorder.

📥 Step 1: Download your video from Loom

  1. Open the Loom video you want to use.

  2. Click the Download icon in the video toolbar. If you do not see it, open the ••• (more options) menu and choose Download.

  3. Save the video file to your computer.

💡 If the Download option is greyed out, the video owner has disabled downloads. Ask them to enable downloads in the video's settings, or have them export the file for you.

📤 Step 2: Upload the video into Whale

Option 1: From the main "+" button

  1. Click the ➕ icon at the top-right corner of your Whale screen.

  2. Select Import Video.

  3. Upload the file you downloaded from Loom and click Next.

  4. Give your new card a title and choose a location in your workspace.

  5. Click Next to let Whale process the video.

Whale automatically analyzes the video and generates a new card with the step-by-step breakdown. Every step links back to the moment it happens in the video.

Option 2: From within a playbook

You can also start directly from a playbook (Grid or List View):

  • Click Create New Card

  • Choose Import Video

  • Follow the same steps above to upload and generate the guide

Working with long videos

Longer videos can time out or be harder for the AI to process. The most reliable approach is to split your recording into shorter clips, one per section of the workflow, then link the resulting guides together. For the full set of options, see Generating Guides from video.

Example

You recorded a 2-minute Loom walking through a new software feature. After downloading it from Loom and uploading it to Whale, you get a guide with steps like:

  • "Click the 'Settings' icon"

  • "Navigate to 'Preferences'"

  • "Enable the integration toggle"

Each step includes a clickable link that jumps to the exact moment in the video.

Your Loom recordings become reusable, searchable, and actionable inside Whale, with no manual transcribing or step breakdowns.
