Using AI skills in Whale

AI skills turn your cards and checklists into skills for AI tools connected to Whale through the Whale MCP, such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. A connected tool can read the card or checklist and carry out its steps. Skills are for these outside AI tools, not for Coral.

*AI skills are available on the Advance and Enterprise plans. Only admins can add, edit and remove skills.

📍 Where to Find It

Admins add and manage skills in Agents â€ș Coral settings â€ș MCP â€ș Skills (https://app.usewhale.io/knowledge-health/assistant?ai-settings-tab=mcp). If you renamed your assistant, you see that name instead of Coral. To connect an AI tool first, see Connecting an AI assistant to Whale with MCP.

đŸ› ïž Adding a Skill

  1. Click Add skill.

  2. Under Card or checklist, pick the content the skill should use.

  3. Enter a Name.

  4. Under When to use, describe when the AI tool should use the skill, for example "when someone asks how to process a refund".

  5. Click Create.

🔁 Turning a Card or Checklist into a Skill

  1. Open the card or checklist, click Share, then open More ways to share.

  2. Click Turn into a skill. This option is shown to admins on plans that include AI skills.

  3. In Add skill, check the Name (it’s filled in from the content title), fill in When to use, and click Create.

The skill stays linked to the card or checklist. It isn't a copy.

🧠 How AI Tools Use Skills

When to use is free text. It tells the AI tool when the skill applies, and there's no setting for "when relevant" or "always". Whale doesn't run the steps itself. The connected AI tool reads the card or checklist and does the steps. People only get skills for content they can read.

❓ Common Questions

Why can't I see AI skills in the Share drawer?
The Turn into a skill option is only shown to admins on plans that include AI skills.

Do skills use AI tokens?
There's no separate charge for skills. Calls from your AI tool over MCP are billed as normal. See Connecting an AI assistant to Whale with MCP.
